Life Drawing in South Jersey

There’s a group of artists that get together and meet monthly for an evening of drawing from life.

I’m not exactly certain of the date this figure drawing group got started but I’ve been drawing with them for about 18 years. I remember first jumping in on a figure drawing night when it was held at the Ocean City Arts League down on 9th and Asbury.Artist Jim Penland founded the Ocean City Fine Arts league, where he started this figure drawing group. If the model didn’t show up on a life drawing night, he’d jump in and be the model. Remind me to look for one of my drawings of him…

I remember one night I was drawing beside artist, Joe Kardonne wearing his Panama type hat and pants made of four different prints – a different one for fronts and backs of his legs. The model hadn’t shown up and Jim was modeling. Joe turned his friend Jim into a red light disrtic French woman holding a cigarette with watercolors. (I’d love to see that piece again, btw.)

There was an unmistakably infectious creative energy in the group.

The group’s venue has changed a few times. Starting on 9th & Asbury, moving with the art league down to 6th & Asbury, meeting at Linda Gazsi’s studio in Linwood, and now meeting at the Ocean City Arts Center on 17th & Simpson.

Over the years, I’ve done tons of croquis, drawings, pastels and paintings. Some nights I’ve gone and just made a big mess. Others I’ve gone not feeling it and left surprised. Other times I’ve gone and banged out a few finished pieces with shocking quickness. Sometimes the group energy helps to knock off the dust.

It’s something I love being a part of. It’s wonderful to have the chance to be creative beside such wonderful and encouraging artists as Jack Stopkoski, Meed Barnett, among so many others.

Join us.

For more information, get onto the email list. Meed Barnett keeps the group organized and going. An email goes out ahead of time with the details of the model, length of poses, any theme that might be happening, whether or not the model will be nude, etc…

The group meets if enough people RSVP and commit to going (enough commitments to cover the model.)

It’s usually the 2nd Thursday of every month from 5pm – 8:45. You don’t have to arrive right at 5, it’s okay to come anytime during the figure drawing session.

If you want in, send Meed an email.
