Statement

Jodee Clifford, 2004, Oil Painting: Green Sweater, Mixed Media

An oil painter from the southern New Jersey shore, exploring relationships through human form, body language, and connection.

I find the human form fascinating. It’s this tangible, unique thing we experience life through. I do quite a bit of drawing from life, and I use those drawing as painting references.

Figures on Clothes

Figures on Clothes was one of my first series of paintings around 2003. I painted them with relationship ideas between clothing and the human form explored between subject matter and material. I painted nude female figures directly onto the surface of stretched and prepared clothing as I would on primed canvas. I enjoyed something about the irony with the subject matter and materials.

First Impressions

In 2018, I started doing these oil paintings called “First Impressions”. They’re slow oil paintings from croquis flushed out in oil paint. They parallel the way we fill in unknown character traits based on little more than instincts after meeting someone new.

Paint forms

Begun in 2020, these sculptural oil paintings are mixed media pieces about transformation.

Connection

In 2016, I began a series of oil paintings, watercolor paintings, drawings, and ink drawings exploring human connection with body language, touch, and gesture; communicating and connecting without words through improvisational lead and follow social dance. As a dancer who formerly worked in media, this body of work is a reflection of natural communication in contrast to verbal or written language.

Living in a coastal area, bridge paintings relate connection from another perspective.

Relationship

I’m fascinated with relationships, connection, language, instincts, and intuition.

Away from my easel, I’m pretty fond of social dancing.
